A Documentary As a Latino boy growing up in Chicago, James Lilly, dreamed of becoming a professional athlete. Despite his parents’ effort to keep him busy, lack of their supervision led James to drift. His dreams began to fade as he started to associate with a gang. They died altogether when he was shot and paralyzed at the age of fifteen. Through intimate interviews James reveals his longings for connection that drove him to gang life, the thrills that kept him there, the horrors he experienced, and the struggle to break free. Today James lives in a suburb of Chicago with his wife and two young sons. His disability is a constant reminder of the life as a thug. He reveals his struggles and frustration of being disabled as he attempts to be the father he always wished his own father to be. Meanwhile James works with the inner city school kids to help them stay on the right track by sharing his story, which gives him a great sense of fulfillment. He also reveals the one thing that helped him move on –– wheelchair racing. After competing in countless races, there’s one race he covets the most: winning the world’s longest wheelchair race covering 276 miles of dramatic terrain from Fairbanks to Anchorage, Alaska. His determination to win this race drives him to return year after year to compete in grueling conditions, undaunted, until the victory is his own. |
